Trail Report: Keweenaw Peninsula / Houghton-Hancock, South Range, Copper Harbor, Michigan – March 7, 2017

Trail Conditions: Fair
Snow Cover: 24" and up
Date of Report: March 7, 2017
Area Report:

All trails in the Keweenaw to Twin Lakes are open and you can ride.  Trail 17 going thru downtown Hancock is not being groomed because of the low snow, but grooming starts right outside of town.  Trail 3 is not being groomed through Houghton and up heading to South Range because of low snow.  Once you get going towards South Range, grooming starts again.  We got a quick flurry of snow a little while ago that stuck to the ground.  Temps are dropping for the rest of the week and snow is forecasted a bit each day.  You never know tho, with the wind coming across Lake Superior.  That lake effect is hard to forecast!  The temp this morning at 6 am was 50 and now at 11:30 am its 27!  Groomers will be out every day as needed since temps will be plenty low enough. Trails are hard, icy but definitely can ride.  Even just a few inches of snow would make the trails a lot better.  As I type this, a group of 8 sleds just went by!

Trail 122 between Lake Linden and Gay is closed due to logging.  You can take the trail as far as the Dreamland trail, but no farther.  Trail 133 between Gay and Lac Labelle is rough, but open.

Respect others on the trail and private property while out riding, keep that speed down, stay on the marked, groomed trails, and save the drinking for after the riding!!

Happy Trails from the Trail Goddess!
