Trail Report – : Sayner, Wisconsin – December 8, 2021

Reporter:SaynerStar Lake Barnstormers

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 8″ +

Date of Report: December 8, 2021

Area Report:

Last weekend brought us a good 8″ of fresh snow.  The Sayner/Star Lake Barnstormers have been out panning trails and removing trees that have recently fallen.  The forecast is calling for more snow this coming weekend, but being followed by a week of warmer temps.

While more snow is usually a good thing, right now it is slowing the freezing of swamps & lakes.  We really need more freezing before more snow!

As far as trail opening goes, a few things need to happen first.  We have to get through the final stages of deer hunting, which ends December 12.  All of the trails need to be officially inspected.  There are a fair amount of trails in the county that go through swampy areas, and until these are sufficiently frozen, the trails won’t be ready.  All 11 clubs in Vilas county have to be ready, as we all open as a group.

Please support all of the clubs by participating in their fundraisers!  Here’s a list of what’s coming up for the Barnstormers.  You can also get more info at http://www.saynerbarnstormers.com.

Trail Report – : Rhinelander, Wisconsin – December 7, 2021

Reporter:Hodag SnoTrails

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 6-8″ fluffy white gold

Date of Report: December 7, 2021

Area Report:

Yes, white gold is covering the trail base.  The trails are not open, and there is not a date set for opening at this point. The swamps and lakes need to freeze over solid before trails can open. The groomer drivers and club  members are out inspecting and most importantly packing the trails to get them ready for opening.  All trails must be inspected and packed. The challenge with the large amount of snow that fell last weekend as it acts as an insulator, slowing the freeze down of the swamps.  Multiple trips with snowmobiles and/or the groomer will help the process.  Some areas are too wet for the groomers to go through, and sled traffic is the needed mode of trail packing.

Make no mistake, this is a good start to the season, just takes time and cold weather to get them ready for opening.

If you haven’t joined a club, please do.  All clubs could use the support of all that use the trails.  Thank you for your patience, and more news to come.

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow.

Vilas County Parks & Rec Supervisor has started trail inspections.  When all 11 clubs are inspected & ready to go as with every year it’s a waiting game until the Muzzle loader season & 4 days youth hunt are completed.  So the earliest would be the December 14th.

In the meantime keep THINKING COLD!  And a SNOW DANCE might be good too.  Try to have some photos of the SNOW tomorrow.

Trail Report – : Keweenaw Peninsula / Houghton-Hancock, South Range, Copper Harbor, Michigan – December 2, 2021

Reporter:Stretch

Trail Conditions: Not Ridable

Snow Cover: 1″-2″

Date of Report: December 2, 2021

Area Report:

The season started yesterday with drizzle and warm weather hitting a high of 40°.  So our trails have very little rain soaked snow which will harden up once it freezes again. Good news the forecast shows for snow this weekend into Monday.

Keep in mind the Portage bridge is not down for snowmobile traffic yet due to the on going construction. I’m told by MDOT that it will turned over to us between December 17th and the 20th. I will keep you posted when it will be open for snowmobiling. Also trail 3 from Dollar Bay to Lake Linden and the Frieda trail are still closed.
