UPDATE 3/11- We picked up about an inch of snow last night and it is currently snowing. It’s not supposed to amount to much. Groomers are reporting that all trails are in good condition. Roads and shoulders are bare from a couple of days of sun and high temps but trails are holding up well. All trails are groomed at least 5 times per week. Please see below for each trail. There is still a lot of great riding to be had. Ride safe!
-There is now a plowed parking area at the beginning of trail #8 under the International Bridge, which has an all-season porta potty. Make sure you lock your vehicles and trailers.
-We now have a marked trail going to Chippewa Motors. It starts once you come out of the woods east of M-129 off #449. It comes into their parking lot from behind if you need parts or service.
-City curfew is from 1 am – 6 am. Remember most City streets are open to traffic 20 mph, stop at all intersections, and ride on the right-hand side of the street, not on sidewalks. Watch for closed streets that are posted, mainly around the hospital, university, and state trunk lines.
-When the trail is running along roads make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road.
-Remember trail base is the amount of snow between your track and the ground below not the amount of fluff piled up in the woods. 10 inches of snow compresses to less than an inch on the trail.
-If you are staying in the Sault please look at our list of supporters on our web page and give them your business. Please do that in all the towns you visit. The grooming entities are all made up of volunteers who want you to support those who support us!!!!!!

Winter Snowmobile and All-Season Trails (As of 3/10/2020)
All snowmobile and Winter ATV trails under the management of the Douglas County Forestry Department will officially close for the season at 8:00 am local time on Monday, March 16, 2020. Douglas County has received two days of warm weather last weekend and the trail conditions across the county range from good to poor. There are many areas of bare ground and almost all grooming has stopped on all trails. Snowmobile traffic is not recommended.
PLEASE check the trail you intend to use is open and do not trespass on private property. It is critical that we respect the landowners who allow us to utilize their property. It just takes one owner to deny the use of their land for a trail to be permanently shut down, so please be courteous and wait for the trails to officially open.
The following all-year-round recreational trails will temporarily close March 16, 2020, except for the following trail segments:
Gandy Dancer – MN/WI Stateline to Patzau.
Saunders Grade – MN/WI Stateline to Schallameir Road Parking Lot
Wild Rivers Trail – Douglas Co./Washburn Co. line to a point 500 feet north of County Highway Y
Wild Rivers Trail – North Trailhead parking lot (County Highway A) to the Harroun Road.

Cross Country Ski Trails (As of 3/10/2020)
Douglas County Ski Trails – The ski trails have been groomed on 2/19 and are still covered in snow. The trails are packed hard and the groomer was unable to cut new tracks in the packed snow. Grooming is suspended until further notice, however, the trails are open.
Superior Municipal Forest – Update 3/9: Groomers are reporting 80% of the trails are groomable and holding up. The classic track is very icy and won’t be worked on unless we get fresh snow. The groomers will try to keep up on the skate deck as long as possible with warmer weather. Skiers should watch for ice and some flowing water in the low spots on the trails. At this time, weekend grooming has been suspended.
Pattison State Park – No new updates are available.
Brule River After Hours Trail – Update on 3/9: Skate decks have been groomed. On roughly half the trails, two passes were made. Expect some debris, and there are a few thin spots and ice patches. Still a significant base on the trails.
