Trail Report – : Bayfield County, Wisconsin – December 10, 2019

Reporter:BayfieldCounty

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 24 to 36 inches

Date of Report: December 10, 2019

Area Report:

Bayfield County Trails are currently closed. We have received a lot of snow which is going to make for a great season but has created challenges for opening the trails. There are a lot of downed trees from the heavy snow and it’s been slow going for clubs to get to all the trails. The snow has also insulated swamps and wet spots creating some dangerous conditions, we’re hoping that some packing of the trails by clubs and the cold temperatures this week will fix many of those. Additionally, the anterless deer season goes until December 15th and we want to be sure to honor the rights of our private property owners that allow the trails to go through their land. With all that we anticipate our trails will open on December 16th. In the meantime, the Tri-County Corridor is open as are the many miles of Forest Roads.

SNOWMOBILE TRAILS IN EAGLE RIVER
& ALL OF VILAS COUNTY ARE NOT OPEN.

6 inches of new SNOW yesterday! Nice surprise as the forecast was for 3 inches.  Bringing the off trail totals back to 20 inches & on panned trails back to 12 inches+.  This morning it is 3 degrees at 5:50am with a high of 7 today & below zero tonight.  Wednesday temps will be in the single digits during the day & below zero at night.  Thursday temps will come up & bring more SNOW.  1-3 inches forecast for Thursday.  More SNOW Saturday!

There still are clubs working to clear up the last of the trees & branches on trails.  With the cold throughout today & tomorrow & panning on the trails to push the air out & force snow into the wet area things should freeze up.

Trail inspections continue.  It takes 10-11 days to get all of the 11 clubs trails inspected. This all goes on while we wait for the 10 muzzleloader season & 4 day antlerless deer seasons to end on December 15. So no opening until sometime after the deer hunts end.

Be Patient.  Won’t be long now! See ya on the trails sometime in mid-December.
