Trail Report – : Bayfield County, Wisconsin – February 20, 2019

General Countywide Report:
Last week, two separate snowstorms blanketed the entire county with 12” to 24+” of new snow. Another significant snowstorm is predicted this week. All clubs are reporting some of the best riding conditions of the year. Please be aware of maintenance equipment on the trail, as grooming can occur at any time, day or night, especially with all of the new snow. Approach all wet areas with extra caution and be prepared to turn around if the crossing appears suspicious. Be wary of low hanging branches, wet areas, downed trees and/or limbs, and other similar hazards that may compromise the trail.

See below for area specific reports. For the most up to date report of trail conditions, please contact the local snowmobile club.

Drummond Snojacks: All trails are actively being groomed and are in very good to excellent condition. Reminder to users…trails in the Mason area are entirely on private property. Stay on the trail, don’t cut corners or look for shortcuts.

Namakagon Trail Groomers: 8-10″ base. All trails were groomed on 2/19. Trails are in very good to excellent condition. Grooming is ongoing at this point – could be out there any day of the week, night or day.

Valhalla Area: Trails in the Valhalla, Red Cliff and Bayfield peninsula are all in excellent riding condition with another 3 inches of new snow early this week and 8 inches expected for Wednesday night. Grooming continues 24 hours a day six days a week. Remember StayRight, RideSober.

Iron River Area: By the end of the week all Iron River area trails, including the Tri County Corridor, will be groomed and in excellent riding condition.

Frosty’s Vintage Riders (Mason/Delta Area): Mason/Delta Area trails were groomed on 2/19. Trails are in excellent conditions with a 12-15″ base. More new snow is expected on Wednesday.

South Shore Trail Club (Port Wing, Herbster & Cornucopia Areas): All Trails (1, 11, 40 & 41) will be groomed by tomorrow (2/21) and will be in excellent riding condition. Port Wing Trails from Iron River to Touve Road are in very good condition and will be groomed again before the weekend.

A portion of Trail 40 (Wally Polk) was recently plowed, but is still open. If riding this section of trail be aware of logging activity, including haul trucks. To get to Port Wing, an alternate route would be Trail 43 to Trail 66 to Trail 3.

Barnestormers (Barnes Area): All Barnes trails have been groomed and are in excellent condition. We are expecting more snow, should be a great weekend for riding. Logging operations south of Mulligan Creek Road (Trail 31 South) are finished, however there are new areas being logged by 43 road. Be careful in this area.

Waino Riders (Northwest Corner of the County): Waino Riders groomed the trails on Monday and will go out again on Thursday or Friday morning. Trails in perfect shape.

Washburn Valhallers: Trail #13 North and South out of Washburn were fresh groomed on 2/18 and 2/19 and are in excellent condition. They will both be groomed again before the weekend.

Closures:

Trail 63 in the Cable Area: Trail 63 just south of the intersection with Trail 70 south of the town of Cable is closed until further notice.

Trail 31 South, into the City of Bayfield, is closed for the entire season.

Re-Routes:

Trail 4 just east of Mason: Trail is closed at Yderstad Rd. Take Yderstad north to Brown Rd. then back South on Roy Anderson Rd where you can pick up the trail again. Follow signs.

Trail 4 in Delta: At Camp One road and County H. Follow the signs.

Trail 63 and 70 into Cable: To get into the Town of Cable from the East take Randysek Rd. North into town.

Trail 40 just South of Port Wing: Flag Rd. is closed. Use East White Birch Rd. to get into Port Wing.

Other Notes:

A portion of Trail 17, located west of Highway 27, and heading west through Sawyer and Bayfield Counties, has been plowed for a logging operation. The trail remains open, but please be aware of logging activity, including haul trucks.

A portion of Trail 31 South, located west of 43 Road has also been recently plowed for a logging operation. This trail also remains open, but please be aware of the logging activity, including haul trucks.

Area Report:

Trail report for February 20, 2019– Trails are very good. The temps have been dipping below zero during the late night and early morning the last few days. The bright sun has been out during the middle of the day in the high 20s but with all the new white snow help slow down the degrading of the trails. We expect the traffic to increase toward the weekend. Today we are expecting another snowstorm and possibly could get about 4 to 6 inches. The corners and other areas remain icy. Please use caution! The groomers will be out tonight, tomorrow morning and the rest of the weekend to do what they can to lay out a nice trail. Be aware with the large amounts of snow and the increase in traffic it creates bumps quickly, especially in congested areas near town. Remember to be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.

*Please note – The Saunders Grade Trail will be closed for the entire 2018/2019 winter season due to significant damage caused by June 2018 flooding.*

It is critical that we respect the landowners who allow us to utilize their property, so please verify that the trail you intend to use is open at this time.

SW Quadrant

Trails are in good condition! Trail 9 is closed between the Town Road TT and the North Road. Watch for signs on Trail 5 at the Beaver Brook crossing for reroute around an ice issue.

SE Quadrant

All trails are open and are in great shape! Most trails are scheduled for grooming before the weekend. Watch for logging operations on Trail 41N, Trail 541 and Trail 17S. Trails are in great condition, have fun and ride carefully!

*Please note – The CN Railroad is warning snowmobilers to stay off railroad property in Solon Springs. There is a new trail to Solon Springs (Trail 27B). Where the trail meets Business Highway 53, snowmobilers must use the road shoulders and not the railroad property to access the railroad crossing on Main Street. Snowmobilers have and will continue to be ticketed for operating on the railroad’s property.*

NE Quadrant

Please watch for low hanging brush and limbs.

All trails are open and have been groomed since the weekend. Conditions of the trails are very good to excellent.

NW Quadrant

All trails are open except for Saunders Grade, which is closed for the season. All trails have been groomed or will be groomed by Wednesday.

Please note: The City of Superior will be hosting a winter triathlon on Sunday, March 3rd from 6:00 AM till 3:00 PM. During those times some of the Motorized and Ski trail sections will be closed in the Superior Municipal Forest. Motorized traffic will not be allowed on 42nd Street from Badger Drive to Albany Avenue or on the northern half of Billings Drive from 42nd Avenue to the northern Cross Town Trail intersection. Trail crossings over those mentioned sections of road will be closed which will result in no through traffic from the “Ski Shack parking lot” on 28th Street to the “Albany Avenue
Snowmobile parking lot”. Additionally, trail traffic will need to USE CAUTION on the Cross Town (East-West) trail section near highway 105 where the trail crosses Billings Drive. Extra event staff and racers will be using this section of the drive. Please respect any barricades and gates across these sections of trail to keep race traffic safe.

Douglas County Ski Trails

Douglas County Ski Trails – Parking lots and service roads have been plowed. Trails were packed on Thursday due to drifting issues. Trails were groomed and tracked on Friday and are in good condition.

Superior Municipal Forest – All trails will be groomed and tracked. It will be a beautiful weekend to ski! Trails are in excellent condition.

After Hours Ski Trail – All trails have been groomed and tracked. Trails are in excellent condition. Happy skiing!

Pattison State Park – All trails are groomed and tracked. The trails are in excellent condition with 10 inches of base, 28 inches in the woods. Tracks are at full depth. Excellent conditions! Vehicle admission is required.

Trail Report – : Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin – February 20, 2019

Our trails are in excellent condition! We went for a short ride on Monday. Boulder and Manitowish Waters trails were GREAT. This is a great time of year to get up here and ride! The week after a holiday weekend is usually a bit slower – so get out and Ride!

BEWARE OF DEER AND OTHER WILDLIFE ON THE TRAIL With the deep snow in the woods you will see many deer trying to move around. Be a good person and give them time to get off of the trail! It is this time of year that is real hard on all the wildlife: cold temps, scarce food sources and poor mobility due to deep snow makes it real tough on them.

Snowmobile Information:

The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters snowmobile club was founded in 1968 and is one of the oldest snowmobile clubs in existence today in Wisconsin. Located in the very northwest corner of Vilas county, Manitowish Waters borders the Lake Superior snow-belt country. With average snowfalls of 150 inches and over 25 miles of professionally groomed trails, the area is one of Vilas County’s top winter vacation areas.

The Manitowish Waters trail system is a unique hub network directly linking into 5 other trail systems. With Minocqua/Woodruff to our south, St. Germain/Eagle River to our southeast, Lake Gogebic to our north, Presque Isle/Winchester to our northeast, Mercer and Hurley to our northwest and Lac du Flambeau/Price County to our west, our area residents and guests can choose from a variety of daily or overnight destinations for scenic riding with excellent pit stops along the way.

The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters maintain an active grooming schedule for the area’s trail system. Coordinated efforts with the surrounding communities provide continuous smoothly-groomed trails in this northwest sector. The Sno-Skeeters own and operate some of the newest grooming equipment on the market today. Support the club by attending their special events or contributing to the “trail pigs” at local establishments along the trails. Or show your support by becoming a member!

Trail Report – : Rhinelander, Wisconsin – February 20, 2019

Area Report:

There is a ton of snow out there and more expected today 4-6″. With the amount of snowmobile traffic last weekend and two mechanical issues, the trails got beat up bad by Saturday night. The groomers are all back-up and running, and the drivers have the trails back to excellent shape.

With the amount of traffic on Saturdays, it’s nearly impossible to keep the trails flat on the weekends. The groomers are out 5-10 hours every night trying to get them flat.

The lakes are starting to show some slush with the amount of snow on them. In addition, there are some roads plowed across them for access to fishing spots. The lakes are by no means race tracks at this point. Please be aware of the risks when crossing the lakes.

Have a safe ride. Now is the time to enjoy the trails.

SNO-EAGLES TRAILS OPEN!
Trails Good to Very Good!

February 20 2019 6:40am – 12 – High 24 – SNOW moving in

Grooming continues in Sno-Eagles Country, Eagle River. Plenty of SNOW out there. Most trails east, north, northeast & northwest were groomed last night.

With the great conditions it makes trail reports hard as the trails are still in Good to Very Good condition. Terrific year for snowmobiling!

Volunteers were out clearing up more branch & tree fall on the trails over the last couple days. Most of the road crossings have very high banks. So take it slow & please stop at the road & driveway crossings. Work will start on digging out trail signs that have gotten buried & replacing those that have been knocked over or are missing. Noticed some on buried signs 10E & 70W. Again take it slow.

The evil sun softens up the SNOW during the day & crusting it up as the temps drop. With the ice base underneath it can make riding squirrely. Might even dart around a little. Some of that on the northside of 10E the one way headed west back to Eagle River. There are areas with chop & even some areas with moguls. Also saw some blow out starting in some corners. In town for the most part no snirt at the crossing as of yesterday morning. Later in the day the sun was high so that may have changed.

Next SNOW is forecast for Wednesday with some of the weather guys forecasting 3-5 inches. Looks like SNOW for next weekend too. But it is early & we all know the weather guys do not always get it right. So stay tuned.

EAGLE LAKE TRAIL & CATFISH LAKE TRAIL ARE MARKED & OPEN. Stay by the reflective orange barrels. There was wind Sunday evening so there could be some moguls. Be safe & slow down.

Been mentioning this all season:

Sno-Eagles Country has 2 areas that have one-way trails. 10E is a one-way trail from the ERRA Sports Arena all the way out to Nicolet Mini Mart. The other is the 13’s up near Buckatabon Bridge & Bauer’s Dam area. Clearly marked with DO NOT ENTER signs. Plus trail signs are backwards if you are going the wrong way.

Remember mid week riding is the best! Time to ride!

Here are your current conditions
Record snowfalls the past few weeks have made for the best trails in years. More snow coming this week. We have not seen this much snow in a long time. No better time to ride then now. Lakes might start to get slushy, so the throttle is your friend. If you feel slush, hammer down. You may encounter a icy corner. Everything is in excellent shape. Watch out for low hanging branches. All trails are being groomed 4-5 times a week.

Please, slow down and limit your drinking. Way too many fatalities in northern Wisconsin, and they all can be prevented.

Lakes are all marked. Remember, stay as close to the barrels as possible. If you don’t see barrels, assume they are not safe.

Please respect our private landowners and stay on the trail. We have had a couple issues this year already and it always puts our trails in danger.

Use caution at all road crossing as they are icy.

All Washburn County Snowmobile trails are open at this time. Several heavy snow events in recent weeks have allowed for excellent trail conditions. Clubs are out in force, regularly grooming the trails. Current trail conditions are excellent, with a snow base of 11-16 inches. Enjoy the trails!!

All Lincoln County trails are open. Please watch all signs and stay on marked trails. The Tomahawk area is getting more snow this week. Trails are in very good to excellent condition.

ALL Oneida Country Snowmobile and ATV trails are OPEN. Trails are being reported to be in very good to excellent condition. Stay on marked trails only.
