Trail Report – : Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan – March 26, 2018

Reporter:SaultSteMarie

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: Base is 1 inch

Date of Report: March 26, 2018

Area Report:

Grooming is done for the season

Trail #8 going west is the only trail left that is rideable.  The sun is melting a little bit of snow every day and areas in the open will develop bare spots on corners.

Follow us on Facebook, too.

We have a newly-plowed parking area at the beginning of Trail #8 under the International Bridge, which now has an all-season porta-john.  Make sure you lock your vehicles and trailers.

If you are staying in the Sault, please look at our list of supporters on our web page and give them your business.  Please do that in all towns you visit.  The grooming entities are all made up of volunteers who want you to support those who support us!

Remember, trail base is the amount of snow between your track and the ground below, not the amount of fluff piled up in the woods.  10 inches of snow compresses to less than an inch on the trail.

Sault Ste. Marie to Brimley, Trail #8 –

Base 0- 2 inches – Trail is in poor to fair condition.

Brimley to Raco, Trail #8 –

Base 1 – 4 inches – Trail is in fair condition.

When going across the bridge in Brimley, make sure you go with the flow of traffic!  Blowing and drifting occurs when you first leave Brimley.

Raco to Naomikong Trail #8 [where Paradise meets us], Trail #8 –

Base 0- 4 inches – Trail is in fair condition.

Sault Ste. Marie City Trail, Trails #497, #449, parts of #8 & #49 –

Base 0 – 2 inches – Trail is in poor condition.

We now have a marked trail going to Chippewa Motors.  It starts once you come out of the woods east of M-129 off #449.  It comes into their parking lot from behind if you need parts or service.

City curfew is from 1 am – 6 am. Remember, most City streets are open to traffic 20 mph, stop at all intersections, and ride on the right-hand side of street not on sidewalks. Watch for closed streets that are posted, mainly around the hospital, university, and state trunk lines.

Sault Ste. Marie to Kinross, Trail #49 –

Base 0 – 2 inches – Trail is in poor condition.

Make sure you follow the reroute once you cross the bridge going south at 7 Mile Road.

When the trail is running along roads, make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road.

Kinross loop & south to Pickford, Parts of Trail #49, #472, and #494 –

Base 0 – 2 inches – Trail is in poor condition.  Watch for trucks on the trail.

Kinross to Raco & Rudyard, Parts of trail #472 & #480 –

Base 1 – 3 inches – Trail is in poor condition. Watch for reroute signs just west of Kinross.  Trail to Rudyard has been groomed, but logging is going on, too.

Lake Gogebic Area Groomers Report 3/19
Sled Season 2018 is on the books –but what a great season it has been! Our weather forecast over the next few days is anything but positive for our rapidly deteriorating trails, and groomers have packed it up for the season. Many trails are in not rideable condition, but if you are out there riding – please use caution as wet spots will re-develop with melting snow.
Delivering some of the best riding in the Country is not something that happens easily or overnight. It a long-term group effort fueled by a team of truly dedicated, hard-working and knowledgeable (stubborn) people. It’s a team of people who you can count on to GSD when it really matters and it’s those people who make the U.P. a unique and special place to visit and live. Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this season a success and a big show of gratitude to Mother Nature for her fabulous appearance! No matter how big or small your role may have been – your role is important – and it all makes a difference!
On behalf of our Gogebic Area Groomers, all our local area businesses, volunteers, members and supporters (Moonshine Riders) – we also want to thank everyone who came to ride our Gogebic Area trails this season! We know that you have a choice of where to ride – we are glad that you choose Lake Gogebic – and we look forward to seeing you again next year!

Groomer Report
Snowmobiling Season 2018 seems to be over – technically it’s not over until March 31 but there is no snow in the forecast and we are down to gravel in many places!
We had a good season even with the lower than normal snowfall amount and this doesn’t mean we couldn’t have a freak storm but it doesn’t look good. If you do come up to ride there are many wet areas so use caution and please remember there are restrictions for no off trail riding (forest roads are allowed) in the Ottawa National Forest
We have a small but truly dedicated and hard-working team that spent countless hours to provide the best trails they could. Drivers and Trail Boss THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
And to all of you, thank you for your support and encouragement, through the season is truly appreciated!

With the warm daytime temperatures, trail bases are reduced and there are exposed rocks and bare ground throughout the trails.  As of Tuesday, March 14, grooming on state trails has ceased.  Ely area groomers have ceased grooming trails this week.  Warm air temperatures are producing some slush on lakes.  Use caution whether traveling on the forest trails or open lake surfaces.  Trails are rated as poor condition with 0-2 inch bases.

Trail Report – : Bayfield County, Wisconsin – March 22, 2018

Reporter:BayfieldCounty

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: 3-6 inch base

Date of Report: March 22, 2018

Area Report:

With warmer temperatures in the forecast and the sun getting stronger, this will be the last weekend for riding in Bayfield County. Trails will close Monday, March 26th. Groomers have suspended grooming so I don’t have area specifics reports. Generally, the snow is holding in the wooded areas and area that had enough snow to form a good base but with the freeze thaw happening expect some icy spots and corners. Road crossings, road routes, and trails along roads all have patchy snow cover. For lake crossings please check with locals! This is late season riding so expect variable conditions and be safe!

ReReoutes:

  • Trail 13 outside Washburn, follow signs. Permanent reroute.
  • Trail 4 east of Mason, follow signs. Seasonal reroute for now, includes road routes.
  • Trail 70 south of Cable, follow signs. Seasonal reroute for now, includes road routes.

Logging Activity

  • Trail 40 Southeast of Port Wing has a timber sale going active this week so keep your eyes out and stay alert in that area.
  • Trail 51 south of Cornucopia near Jodi road is now being used for an active timber sale. They are logging off the trail and using the trail as a haul route so use caution. Jodi road is also being plowed for a short distance.
