With the warm daytime temperatures, trail bases are reduced and there are exposed rocks and bare ground throughout the trails.  As of Tuesday, March 14, grooming on state trails has ceased.  Ely area groomers have ceased grooming trails this week.  Warm air temperatures are producing some slush on lakes.  Use caution whether traveling on the forest trails or open lake surfaces.  Trails are rated as poor condition with 0-2 inch bases.

Trail Report – : Bayfield County, Wisconsin – March 22, 2018

Reporter:BayfieldCounty

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: 3-6 inch base

Date of Report: March 22, 2018

Area Report:

With warmer temperatures in the forecast and the sun getting stronger, this will be the last weekend for riding in Bayfield County. Trails will close Monday, March 26th. Groomers have suspended grooming so I don’t have area specifics reports. Generally, the snow is holding in the wooded areas and area that had enough snow to form a good base but with the freeze thaw happening expect some icy spots and corners. Road crossings, road routes, and trails along roads all have patchy snow cover. For lake crossings please check with locals! This is late season riding so expect variable conditions and be safe!

ReReoutes:

  • Trail 13 outside Washburn, follow signs. Permanent reroute.
  • Trail 4 east of Mason, follow signs. Seasonal reroute for now, includes road routes.
  • Trail 70 south of Cable, follow signs. Seasonal reroute for now, includes road routes.

Logging Activity

  • Trail 40 Southeast of Port Wing has a timber sale going active this week so keep your eyes out and stay alert in that area.
  • Trail 51 south of Cornucopia near Jodi road is now being used for an active timber sale. They are logging off the trail and using the trail as a haul route so use caution. Jodi road is also being plowed for a short distance.

Trail Report – : Keweenaw Peninsula / Houghton-Hancock, South Range, Copper Harbor, Michigan – March 21, 2018

Reporter:tpeters

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 15″ to 30″

Date of Report: March 21, 2018

Area Report:

Trails are still open up here in the Keweenaw.  There is actually pretty decent snow out on the trails once you get out of town going towards Twin Lakes and north towards Copper Harbor.  Getting through town, Hancock and Houghton, is a little light and the trails are hard and dirty, but you can still get thru and I just watched a pack of 6 sleds go by!  (See pics from Trail 17 going thru Hancock)  It has been cold at night and during the day the high has been mid 20’s.  Bottom line,  plenty of good, white snow out on the trails to ride; so if you are looking to get in your last trip of the season, get up here now before its too late!!

Trail Report – : Price County – Park Falls, Phillips & Prentice, Wisconsin – March 20, 2018

Reporter:Price County Tourism Department

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: 0 – 10 inch trail base

Date of Report: March 20, 2018

Area Report:

Price County snowmobile trails are in poor condition and riding is not recommended at this time. Some areas may still have a good base but conditions are spotty. There are many bare spots and sections where the trail is bare in logging areas, and road routes are bare. Trails in wooded areas are best, so trailering to a parking area along the trail away from town is recommended if you plan to ride. The trails are icy in many areas and especially on corners, and approaches to road crossings are thin or bare in most areas. Tuesday 03/13/19 was the last day of trail grooming. The trails remain open through March 31, 2018.

Several miles of trail are open for winter ATV and UTV riding. The Price County portion of the Pine Line Rail Trail (Prentice to Ogema), Snowmobile Trail 189 (Ogema to Timm’s Hill), and Snowmobile Trails 116, 181 and 118 (Prentice area loop) are open to winter ATV and UTV riding when the trail is officially open to snowmobile use and the temperature is  28 degrees or colder.

Some Price County trails are on private land. The use of the private land is a PRIVILEGE, not a right. Please stay on marked trails, especially across fields. There have been many complaints from landowners due to snowmobilers not staying on the trail and riding all over their fields. To avoid having these TRAILS CLOSED, PLEASE respect the private land that is open to snowmobiling and stay on marked trails.
