Here are your current conditions: A light dusting of snow overnight has layered the trails. This will help with lubrication and cooling for the sleds. Temps remain in the low single digits during the day and below zero at night. All of the trails have either been panned or groomed on a regular schedule and are to be in fair – good condition. Lakes are all marked, please stay close to barrels.

Trail report for January 5, 2018, Fair to good condition. Our trails are still in pretty good shape but very thin. We have been out grooming and doing what we can. Not much snow on the trails but we are able to knock out the bumps and lay out a nice trail. The corners are getting bare and icy. Use caution in the active logging areas. They have very little snow. We have a Brat Fry fund raiser in town at the Granary from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM on Saturday the 6^th of January. Please come out and join us, have some fun and support our snowmobile club! Remember to be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.

Area Report:

Lincoln County snowmobile trails in Zone I are OPEN. Trails south of State Highway 86,Corridor 17 south of intersection #30,Corridor 15 south of intersection #28 and trails 51 and G in the Gleason area remain CLOSED.

All trails in Zone 2 and Zone 3 remain CLOSED in Lincoln County.

Please be aware of trail closed signs, stay on marked trails ONLY and respect private land. Use extreme caution and expect early season riding conditions throughout the trail system.

Trails designated as winter ATV trails are open for ATV use. All trails are closed for ATV use when the temperature is above 28 degrees F.

All trails in Oneida County are OPEN. As always, the Oneida County Forestry, Land, & Recreation Department recommends staying on clearly marked trails. Trail Report – : Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan – January 5, 2018

Area Report:

Two groomers are down right now. One will be down for a couple weeks, and the other hopefully only a couple days. We ran groomers on both Spile Dam Trail 480 and Soo to Kinross Trail 49 today. Good snow on both, but not great or smooth yet. Not much for wet spots.

February 1, help us break the Guinness World Record for the longest snowmobile parade.

We have a newly-plowed parking area at the beginning of Trail #8 under the International Bridge, which now has an all-season porta-john.

If you are staying in the Sault, please look at our list of supporters on our web page and give them your business. Please do that in all the towns you visit. The grooming entities are all made up of volunteers who want you to support those who support us!

Remember, trail base is the amount of snow between your track and the ground below, not the amount of fluff piled up in the woods. 10 inches of snow compresses to less than an inch on the trail.

Sault Ste. Marie to Brimley, Trail #8 –

Base 1 – 3 inches -Trail is in fair to good condition.

Brimley to Raco, Trail #8 –

Base 1 – 3 inches -Trail is in fair to good condition. Watch for drifts in open areas.

When going across the bridge in Brimley, make sure you go with the flow of traffic! Blowing and drifting occurs when you first leave Brimley.

Raco to Naomikong Trail #8 [where Paradise meets us], Trail #8 –

Base 1 – 3 inches – Trail is in fair to good condition. No water.

Sault Ste. Marie City Trail, Trails #497, #449, parts of #8 & #49 –

Base 1 – 4 inches – Trail is in fair condition. Watch for wet areas going to the Antlers.

We now have a marked trail going to Chippewa Motors. It starts once you come out of the woods east of M-129 off #449. It comes into their parking lot from behind if you need parts or service.

City curfew is from 1 am – 6 am. Remember, most City streets are open to traffic 20 mph, stop at all intersections, and ride on the right-hand side of street, not on sidewalks. Watch for closed streets that are posted, mainly around the hospital, university, and state trunk lines.

Sault Ste. Marie to Kinross, Trail #49 –

Base 1 – 3 inches – Trail is in poor to fair condition. They will be running the groomer on it today and the trails should be fair to good after that.

Make sure you follow the reroute once you cross the bridge going south at 7 Mile Road.

When the trail is running along roads, make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road.

Kinross loop & south to Pickford, Parts of Trail #49, #472, and #494 –

Base 1- 3 inches – Trail is in fair Condition. Watch for trucks on the trail.

Kinross to Raco & Rudyard, Parts of trail #472 & #480 –

Base 1 – 4 inches – Trail is in poor to fair condition. They will have the groomer on it today for only the second time. Watch for reroute signs just west of Kinross. Water holes and lots of snow. The trail to Rudyard has been groomed, but logging is going on, too.

The Downtown Trail is signed, but snow and barrels on the Portage Ave. Bridge have not been placed yet.

World Record Attempt

On February 1st, 2018, come to Sault Ste. Marie to help us try to break the world record for the largest snowmobile parade! We need at least 1,048 snowmobiles on February 1, 2018, the Thursday before the 50th Annual International 500 Snowmobile Race.

The $5.00 registration fee per sled is used to cover the costs incurred to break the record. The cost is $10.00 if you sign up the day of the event.

All snowmobile operators must have a valid driver’s license and a registered sled.

Area Report:

Trails in sugar camp are in early season riding conditions yet. With no really measurable snowfall the past few weeks you will encounter alot of brown and snirty conditions. We have just recently gone through all swampy and low lying areas with groomers the past week and these areas will still be rough as we wait for more snow to arrive to fill everything in. The forecast is looking promising the next week here with the chance of some snow. We’ll have to keep our fingers crossed to get some fresh snow to work with on the trails. All lakes in the sugar camp trail system have been marked with orange barrels and are safe to cross. Make sure to stay close to the barrels as you cross the lakes as their were some slushy areas out there yet and were rough in areas as it froze so maintain reasonable speeds while crossing. Remember to purchase your annual trail pass before riding the trails and remember all intersections have a 3 digit number for your safety and in case of emergency that will pinpoint emergency personnel to your location. Think snow!

Use caution as some trails have rough areas through swamps. Most trails are being groomed except southwest of Phillips including south of Soo Lake and the Catawba and Kennan areas. For your safety, please do not ride on the lakes until the lake trails are marked as some areas may still be unsafe for snowmobile travel.

Our temps for today and tomorrow are going to be only in the single digits for highs and below zero for our lows, with snow. Sunday will be in the low 20’s with light snow. With all the cold temps we have had our water holes are firming up, you will still encounter some places that still are wet. Please be patient and use caution when riding.

PLEASE STAY ON TRAILS. WE HAVE BEEN GETTING COMPLAINTS THAT SOME HAVE NOT BEEN STAYING ON TRAILS, RIDING ON UNMARKED TRAILS CAN LOSE EASEMENT FOR OUR TRAIL SYSTEM SO PLEASE STAY ON TRAILS!!!!!!

The Gogebic Range Trail Authority reports:
01/04/2018

Overall conditions are in great shape. There is a 5-8″ base across our system. Please use extra caution when road crossing, also when traveling on county roads keep speeds to 25 miles an hour or less to avoid losing control. Vehicles have the right of way.

Trail 2 from Hurley to Ramsay US-2 Crossing:
Overall rating is good to very good. Thin spots on trail exist, but overall the trail is flat and smooth. The rail-bed trail ENDS on the east side of the Keystone Bridge. The club grooms the bridge to maintain it for local access. The “old” trail to Wakefield is closed east of Verona Rd. and anyone caught riding it will be ticketed.

Trial 2 from Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield:
Overall rating is good to very good. The hill climbs to Indianhead Big Snow Resorts are snow packed and smooth. Corners are icy due to thin snow, so use caution.

Trail 2 from Wakefield to Marenisco:
Overall rating is good to very good. Wet spots exist on the low area along the Great Lakes Road “High-Line” where you come out of the woods and head towards US HWY 2. Snow depth will diminish as you travel from Wakefield to Marenisco.

Trail 8 from Bingos to Tula Crossing:
Overall rating is very good. It is a wide seasonal county road that is not plowed and makes a fun trail to ride.

Trail 160 from Walmart to Montreal River(WI):
Overall rating is good to very good. You will also encounter some active logging near the Lake Road area, please go slow, logging trucks have the right of way. Please remember to stay on the trail!!!! Do not go off the trails and ride on farmers fields, this can lose easement for our trails. This trail is very scenic so enjoy!!

Trial 11S:
Overall rating is open and is good to poor. There are sections where the snow was used up to freeze the mud/water in but are small areas. There are thin spots where we need more snow to cover up the wheeler ruts. Please use caution on this trail.

Lake Gogebic Area Groomer Report: Reported on 1/02/2018

The cold temps are doing a good job firming up the wet spots, but as you may have seen on the Gogebic Area Groomers Facebook page, we still have some places that still are wet (8 West).

Overall, trail conditions are very good to fair, with the good to very good being in the Bergland area and North and the fair trails with thin snow coverage are those on the south end of the Lake. We are hoping that this snow helps us out on the South end.

Trail highlights as of 1/2/18:

Trail 13 North of Bergland is reported as very good – twice the snow and base as the South end of the Lake.

Trail 1 going South from White Pine is also reported as very good.

Trail 1 & 8 North of Bergland is rough and Trail 1 on the west side of Lake Gogebic going south.

Trail 102 has had a lot of traffic but will be groomed tonight.

Trail 8 west of M64 we had a groomer go through last week – please be patient as we get this back in shape.

Trail 13 and there is little base and conditions are reported as fair.

Trail 1 North of West Shore Resort is closed due to logging.

U.P. Thunder Riders of Watersmeet Groomers Report:

Groomers are running on a regular schedule. The trails are grooming up nicely.

Trail 2 east – fair to good

Overcast day in Eagle River. High of 3 today. Perfect weather to build the Ice Castle!

Groomers back out on the trails last night. Here are the trails groomed:

Trails west – 70W
Trails west & south – 7N/17S/13S
Kathan Inn area west
Trails north & northwest – 13N, 10W, 7S
Trails north & northeast – 17N

On the Sno-Eagles Trail Map what was Alt13 or 13a is now Trail 3. That is it’s new number. This is the trail heading south to Three Lakes.

Trail 1N has a logging operation in the section between the Town of Washington Town Hall & Eagle Lake.

Wisconsin River Trail – 10W/13N is now being groomed but it is icy and rough in spots. Same for Manske Swamp – 3N. No surface slush as of yesterday.

Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trails are now both marked and officially open. Please stay by the barrels to be safe. Reminder the Catfish Lake Loop to Lumpy’s is NO LONGER a trail.

If you are riding zip on over to the “grade” to check the progress of the building of the ICE CASTLE!!!! When complete it will be along side the trail where it runs by the Historic Railroad Grade. Check out this link Eagle River Ice Castle to check on progress if you aren’t up here!

We are re-scheduling the trip that was melted out last year. Destination: Konteka Black Bear Resort, White Pine, MI. This is a small resort with a bar & bowling alley. It’s about a 100 mile ride from Eagle River. Mark your calendars now for this fun event. This is a 3 day snowmobile ride (or drive) to a destination for fun, friendship, and lots of silliness with fellow Sno-Eagles members. Trail Report – : Bayfield County, Wisconsin – January 4, 2018

Area Report:

The sustained cold temperatures have helped freeze down swamps and get a solid base, but now we just need more snow! Traffic over the holiday weekend has left some trails with thin spots and even some rocks sticking out so be alert. There is still some great riding to be had, the detailed club reports are below.

Namakagon Trail Groomers: As of Tuesday, 1/2/18, all trails are groomed with a 3-4 in. base. Trails are in fair to good condition! All swamps have been groomed at this point so we are over the hump as for freeze up! NTG would like all the sledders that went out and run down the swamps. Our Operators continue to do a Great job with the limited amount of snow! Hopefully with the few inches in the forecast the trails will get even better!

We do have a detour on trail 90 between Old Grade and Federal Rd. due to logging, Follow the signs.

We also have a trail closure of trail 70 and trail 73 due to trespass issues! Trail 70 East is closed at Randysek Rd. Randysek Rd. is a route north to Spruce St. East to the alley by the lumber yard. South will take you to the stations, café and stores of Cable. Trail 73 South is closed at Cty Hwy M. North will take you toward Drummond on trail 73. Please Stay on the Trails as marked and Respect Private Property! Ride safe and enjoy.

Drummond Snojacks: All trails are in the process of being groomed before the weekend. Trail conditions are good to fair in spots after heavy use over the holidays. There is a reroute of trail #4 north of Mason due to a change of land ownership. New signs are being placed closing off previous trail route over private property and directing traffic to use Brown Road to Roy Anderson Road then back on to trail heading east towards Sanborn. This adds approximately 1.5 miles of road route. Be alert for and observe these changes. The stick trail is now up on Lake Owen.

Here is a detailed report received last Sunday by one of our club members that travels our trails extensively. Trail 63 towards otter bay: Good shape but still some helmet slapped. I cut a few but there were many more. Trail 7 out to 31: Good base but heavy traffic causing large rocks to surface. It was much better on Christmas weekend. Needs snow. Trail 31: Good base. Trail 61: Good base, needs snow. Trail 6 to Flying Eagle: Needs snow. Road is covered with hard pack and ice. Sled runs hot because not enough loose snow for cooling. Trail 63 to Grand View: Good base, but needs more snow.

Barnes Barnestormers: All trails are in fair to good conditions, with the exception of Trail 31S which is in poor condition, use extreme caution, beaver dam wash out approximately 4 miles north of Seeley Fire Lane. All trails were groomed earlier this week with grooming operations continuing today, 1/3/18, lack of snow will be an issue for future grooming.

Bayfield County Snowmobile Alliance – Iron River Area: Iron River will be grooming both Thursday and Friday, 1/4/18 & 1/5/18, if conditions allow. Snow is starting to thin out south of Hwy 2 in Iron River and on Tri County Corridor towards Brule.

Use of Flag Rd (trail 3) is not recommended at this time due to logging operations. Detour as follows;

Trail 3 to junction of Battle Axe Rd/Flag Rd. Continue on Battle Axe Rd (beware of trucks hauling and poor route conditions) to trail 43. At Y intersection take trail 66 to trail 3 again and continue to Port Wing or stay on 43 to Herbster/Valhalla area.

Washburn Valhallers: Trail 13 South from Washburn to Tri-County Corridor was groomed on Tuesday, January 2nd and remains in good condition with only a couple bare spots. A few inches of fresh snow this morning (January 3) will help. A bit more snow predicted this week and we will regroom by the weekend. Trail 13 North from Washburn to Valhalla was also groomed on Tuesday, January 2nd. This trail is also in good condition with more snow north of town. The additional snow today and this week will allow us to re-groom later in the week, prior to the weekend. Happy New Year to all…..let it snow!!!!

WAINO- Northwest corner of the County: Trail 1 has been panned and groomed to south road in Orienta. We stopped there because of the lack of snow and the road had been plowed. In the meantime more snow has fallen and Jeff will hit the trail as soon as it warms up a bit.

Closures:

Trail 1 near Port Wing: Due to a new round of heavy logging on private property, the portion of snowmobile 1 from highway 13 east of Port Wing to Touve RD. will be closed until further notice. At this time there is no viable reroute.
Trail 63 in the Cable Area: Trail 63 just south of the intersection with Trail 70 south of the town of Cable is closed until further notice.

ReReoutes:

Trail 13 outside Washburn, follow signs. Permanent reroute.
Trail 4 east of Mason, follow signs. Seasonal reroute for now, includes road routes.
Trail 70 south of Cable, follow signs. Seasonal reroute for now, includes road routes.

Logging Activity

Trail 40 Southeast of Port Wing is currently being frozen down in preparation for a logging operation.
Trail 1 between Cornucopia and Bayfield near Henkens Road has an active logging operation. They are logging off the trail and using the trail as a haul route so use caution.
Trail 51 south of Cornucopia near Jodi road is being frozen down in preparation for a logging operation.
