Trail Report – : Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – December 2, 2019

Trail Conditions: Unknown

Snow Cover: 8 to 12 inches

Date of Report: December 2, 2019

Area Report:

Hello Riders!

Just a friendly note to clarify any confusion:

Sawyer County snow trails (county land trails) have NO open or close date (this may change in the future), but as of now they do not close and always remain open, however private land trails do have gates and they are not open yet nor is there a target date on that as the land owners and clubs work together checking conditions. Lakes are also not safe or staked so they are not open. Again county land trails are open but there is rifle hunting through tomorrow and muzzle loader through Dec 15th so if riding on county land please ride with caution as there are hunters.

Chequamegon Forest is not open, the Forestry decides when to open and close that area and there is no open date decided yet, just like all the clubs and trail captains they check trails and conditions many times a week as conditions continue they will give a better target date, it is not time yet, while there is a lot of snow the ground is not firm and the swamps are not froze so even if you ride an open county trail you will want to map out your ride ahead of time so that you don’t run into a dead end as you can run into private land and/or lakes or swamps that you can not ride across. Again, we can not stress enough, DO NOT go around a closed gate onto private property, this WILL shut a trail down and that can effect a large trail system, we have had some reports of it happening, do not do it. There was a bit of mis-information that trails open December 1st, again this is not true as the county trails are open now, the private lands will continue to audit the conditions with the clubs. Private property trails will work with clubs and decide when to open their trails, there is no date for that at this time.

These reports are an accumulation of reports from the appointed county trail coordinator, all clubs, Alliance members, office holders for both, trail captains, groomers/brushers/trail maintenance volunteers, equipment managers, Forestry personal and DNR wardens, all who spend a lot of time on the trails and checking conditions and creating the system we have, we are so lucky they all report to this location first so for the most up to date reports visit us here. If you find any reports confusing, misleading or lacking info please feel free to send us a private message inquiring and we will research and clarify, with too many comments on inquiries there can be conflicting and incorrect information. We want our page to be informative, correct and promote and advocate the fun, safety and positivety of these sports. With that said please share your pictures of your riding adventures, scenery, wildlife and more!

Trail Report – : Lake Gogebic | Bergland, Michigan – December 1, 2019

Reporter:AJ’s Walleye Lodge

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: Good

Date of Report: December 1, 2019

Area Report:

Today is the first day of the 2019-2020 snowmobile season.   Groomers in al the area clubs have been hitting it hard to get trails in good shape.   There is still work being done – so if you are riding – – use caution and ride at your own risk.  We got about 8+” inches and there’s more in the forecast today.   Cold temps all next week – so we have a start to the season.

This is what Gogebic Area Grooming has open thus far:

  • Trail 13 south – From trail 8 to trail 2 is broke open.
  • Trail 1 from Bergland to White Pine is broken open.
  • Trail 100 is broke open from FS8800 to 100
  • Trail 13 north is broke open from Bergland to Trail 101 intersection.
  • Trail 8 to Ewen was packed and little thin next to the fields.
  • And trail 102 will be broken open on Dec 1.

Note from groomers:   *The biggest Pain in our a*% trail,  is Trail 8 west from Merriweather to tula is a talk every year.    * Note to all, a ditch is between the trail and the highway.    The closer to the woods the higher the ground is.   We are getting sleds to pack the trail so we can hopefully get a groomer though it.

Also the more traffic on that trail the faster our groomers can get on it. The sleds freeze the trail to keep us above water.

Be sure to give right of way to our Groomers and please consider supporting the clubs where your ride!   We owe our great times to these guys who should the heavy load!   Thank you to our Groomers and thank you to all who visit and support the Lake Gogebic Area!

Trail Report – : Lake Gogebic | Bergland, Michigan – November 29, 2019

Reporter:AJ’s Walleye Lodge

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: Good

Date of Report: November 29, 2019

Area Report:

Lake Gogebic Area has received over 50” of snow so far this season and it looks like this weekend is going to bring about more snow!    Trails open Dec. 1st and we’ve received a lot of calls about coming up to ride – and we want to remind everyone that it is EARLY SEASON which translates into rough terrain, wet spots and groomers still working on trails.  It is “ride at your own risk” at this stage of the game and our groomers are doing a great job of not only maintaining – but keeping us informed.

Please take note to the changes to our following trails – some of which are temporary changes and some of which are permanent.

  • Trail 102: there is a new reroute about 4 miles before trail 11.  The trail is marked well and the reroute was a very nice turn out.     (Temporary Re-Route)
  • Trail 13 North: Trail will  start on Trail 13 towards Rockland from Trail 8 just East of Bergland.  (Permanent Re-Route)
  • Trail 13 South has logging. The first part of December, you will have to run East Shore road all the way past the Root Cellar.   When the logging is done, we can open it back up, which may take us into the New Year.   (Temporary Re-Route)
  • Past the Root Cellar, there is more logging. You will have to travel on East Shore Rd approximately 2 mile further then before to get back onto trail 13.  A new reroute will take place.  Please follow the signs marked 13.   (Permanent Re-Route for the 2019-2020 Season).
  • Trail 100: Logging is happening between Stagecouch Rd and the Slate River (very end of Lake Gogebic)   Marshall Creek Bridge has been fixed so you can get to Marenisco from trail 100. (Permanent for 2019-2020 season)
  • Trail 1 from Trail 100 to Trail 8: Closed until further notice as logging is taking place until the end of December.     You still can access the Gogebic Lodge and we plan to maintain it up to the Lodge, so we can get up and running to open Trail 1.
    • Gogebic Area Groomers are in the process of doing a reroute to the Ethelwood Grade and up to M-28 onto Trail 8. (Temporary)
  • Currently, the only way to get from Bergland to Marenisco is take Trail 13 to 100 to Marenisco or 13 to Trail 2.
    • Lake Gogebic travel is not recommended as ice just went on a few weeks ago!!!
  • Marenisco area is in good shape far as where the trails are going to stay from the past years.

We will keep you updated after opening and as conditions/re-routes changes.   If you see anyting out there that the Groomers need to be aware of – please let us know.

Be safe and we look forward to welcoming you back to the Lake Gogebic Area this season!

This is Mary Beth and Jim from AJ’s Walleye Lodge – and we are looking forward to welcoming you back for another great season!    We are working on the opening of our new Bar & Grill – hopefully early 2020!   See you there!!!

Area Report:

Yes, we got hit with the first of hopefully many snowstorms yesterday.  It may have done more damage then good this early. The lakes and swamps are not frozen enough to hold this much snow. A lot of work for is before December 15th.  Pray for cold weather.

Pleaser do not ride any of the trails. We will lose them if you do. Landowners don’t like Snowmobilers when they are hunting.
