Snowmobile Trails Can Remain Open Until Midnight March 31st

It’s March & we are at a time in the sledding season where the trail conditions news doesn’t change very much. True for today. Temps this morning are at 17 degree with a high of 27. 11 degrees tonight. For the near future temps will be in the high 20’s & 30’s during the day and teens overnight. So the SNOW on the ground isn’t going anywhere. Just that we need new fresh SNOW. Over the last couple of days maybe 2 inches east of Eagle River.

Trails on average remain FAIR. In town trails however are POOR with frozen spots of SNOW & ice in the mornings. As it warms up during the day the SNOW & ice thaw & get mushy and wet especially at road crossings. Many of the road trails for the most part have little or no snow on them. Moving out of town conditions improve but it is a struggle to get to them without a bit of adventure sledding. In woods trails particularly way out east, north & southwest are FAIR with even some areas of GOOD but this is getting far & few between. That would be 6 miles or more. Trailering & dropping off to ride is a good bet.

No grooming at this point.

Here are some continuing areas to be aware of:

Trail 1N logging operation continues in the section between the Town of Washington Town Hall & Eagle Lake. With the log piles and icy grainy conditions in that section it would be good to slow down. Minimal grooming due to the logging operation.

The Northland Pines School Forest logging project has expanded to Trail 17N. It begins on the east side of Hwy 45N. From town that would be heading north and when you reach the 17N/3N intersection on the west side of the highway & cross Hwy 45N it begins just as you get across the road onto the trail. There are logs & equipment in that area. Slow down to be safe.

Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trails are marked with orange easy to see reflective barrels. Please stay by the barrels to be safe. At the entrance to Eagle Lake on the south side off of Dollar Lake Rd there are some soft spots. Trail Boss is keeping an eye on it. Reminder that the Catfish Lake Trail that ran from Braywood to Lumpy’s is not open. Please do not trespass on private land.

Area Report:

After all the trail was groomed, we went out for a ride today…put on about 60 miles. I have to grade the trail as FAIR now.

Yes, some areas are good, but you have to get there. Anywhere that the sun got at is very thin, and some areas no base left at all. The trail along the ditch line on Highway W has a lot of standing water. Your carbides cut through on all road trails. There are bare areas and rocks and mud.

Please, Please, Please…respect our land owners. Do NOT venture off the trail onto their property…always, but especially this time of year, as the ground may be soft.

Wish I could tell you better, but I am being honest. If you are coming up here, you know what to expect.

Taconite Trail: Snow depth: 8-26” Base: 1-3” Groomed: yes Condition: Fair to Good The entire Taconite Trail is in fair to good condition. The trail base is thin due to warm weather and heavy trail use, and there are multiple spots on the trail were bare ground and rocks are exposed. Many corners are also icy.

Arrowhead Trail: Snow depth: 12-26” Base: 1-3” Groomed: Yes Condition: Fair to Good The entire Arrowhead is groomed and in fair to good condition. The trail base is thin due to warm weather and heavy trail use, and there are multiple spots on the trail with bare ground and rocks exposed. Please be aware of logging operations along the trail.

Putnum/Fishing Lakes Trail: Base: 1-4” Groomed: Yes Condition: Good The trail is groomed and in good condition. The base is holding well due to proportionally less use than the Arrowhead and Taconite trails.

Soudan Underground Mine & Vermilion State Park Trails: Base: 2-5” Groomed: Yes Condition: Good The Lake Vermilion Park trails are groomed and in good condition. The base is holding well due to proportionally less use than the Arrowhead and Taconite trails.

Ely Area Trails & Tomahawk: As with the Arrowhead and Taconite trails, the base is thin and will have some exposed trail and rocks. Use caution if traveling on lakes. The warm weather has created slushy conditions on lake surfaces.

Namakagon Trails are in Good to Very Good condition thanks to the 4-6″ of new snow fall! Grooming operations were done last night and early this morning! NTG trails are in as good a condition as we’ve had all year! With lighter traffic and a great base they’re holding up well. PLEASE RIDE SAFE!! Have FUN!

Area Report:

The two inches of fresh powder we received earlier in the week, did not have a significant impact on the overall trail conditions. It basically covered up the bare spots, but it won’t last with any amount of traffic.

As a result, the conditions are the same as last week. They are fair (in the wooded areas, fire lanes, etc..), there are poor sections with bare spots in the exposed areas, and road routes. You can go out and ride, but be aware that you will no doubt hit some poor areas.

We sent the groomers out in some areas to see if there was anything to work with. The groomers are not out on the nightly schedule at this point.

This is late season riding at this point. Please stay on the marked trails at all times.

Barron County snowmobile trails are OPEN! With the 6″ of fresh snow we received on Monday, March 5 the trails are in good condition with a 6-8″ base. Yesterday was a little warm making snow softer so please use caution and watch for dirt at some crossings and sunny spots. HEY!!! DON’T PUT YOUR SNOW MACHINES AWAY FOR THE SUMMER JUST YET!!!! Our trails are in fair condition. A dusting of snow over night along with the 2 inches the other day has helped our trails. The forecast has a chance of flurries and generally overcast skies through the weekend. It’s a “Snow Globe” kind of day out there as snow continues to dust us today. If you can make it up and don’t have expectations of excellent trails, then you will probably be pleasantly surprised. I’M GOING OUT FOR A RIDE TOMORROW AND WILL UPDATE

All public snowmobile trails in Langlade County are open.

With the recent snowfall in Langlade County, the trials are generally fair to good. Expect early spring riding with warmer temperatures. The trail conditions do vary across Langlade County, from fair to good. Bare spots could be present in areas, particularly in the fields and exposed slopes in the wooded areas, along with some corners.

All public snowmobile trails in Langlade County are open to ATV’s, but ATV’s are not allowed on snowmobile trails when the temperature is above 28° F. UTV’s are not allowed on the Langlade County Snowmobile trail system.

Area Report:

All of the Washburn County snowmobile trails are OPEN! Trails are in great condition with a 7 to 13 inch base. Monday night we received 6 to 7 inches of fresh powder. Because of the timing of the new snow, all trails may not be groomed right away. Please be aware that the base might be a little slim at road crossings with a snowy dirt mixture before receiving this fresh snow. Always use caution on the trails as volunteers are out grooming daily to keep them in the great condition they are already in. Enjoy the trails!
