Area Report:

Trail Conditions range from poor to fair. trail 8 and 2 are fair. trail 6 has a 2 mile section that is poor. There is one small section (6 feet long) just north of the intersection of trail 6 and 2 that has thin ice and some open water. we packed it with straw New Years day. It is passable but be aware that it is there. Also we haven’t been able to groom that section, so it is rough. We looked at both ends of the Swamp section between he junction of trails 2 and 6 and 30 point and decided that even taking our mini drag in there could break open more spots, and with the warm weather in the forecast we decided to wait.

As you are out riding, remember this. OUR VOLUNTEERS HAVE BEEN HARD AT WORK TO MAKE OUR TRAILS AS GOOD AS THEY CAN BE. While most people are enjoying the holidays, volunteers across the Northwoods were out today maintaining our trails. Our club is not alone, Remember that as you visit other trail systems. The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters snowmobile club was founded in 1968 and is one of the oldest snowmobile clubs in existence today in Wisconsin. Located in the very northwest corner of Vilas county, Manitowish Waters borders the Lake Superior snow-belt country. With average snowfalls of 150 inches and over 25 miles of professionally groomed trails, the area is one of Vilas County’s top winter vacation areas. The Manitowish Waters trail system is a unique hub network directly linking into 5 other trail systems. Snowmobile Trail Report 1/3/2019

The Fifield Sno Drovers have been out and, as of the end of today, all trails will have been groomed at least once. The conditions are fair in that the snow is very thin in many spots. Some areas are actually in good shape. The lakes are solid with no slush.

Be aware, there is logging activity on trail 108 between trail 101 and Highway 70 and trail 120 south of the swamps. We are NOT grooming these areas as the loggers are keeping them plowed. Beware of icy conditions on these stretches and stay alert for logging equipment and trucks.

The Prentice Bush Benders trails are open. All of our trails have been panned except the northern part of trail 120. There is logging on trail 181. I rode 85 miles of our trails yesterday and they are in overall fair condition with very thin snow cover in various spots. The lack of snow creates rough riding conditions in these places so if you ride please go slow and use caution. Water in some creeks and swamps has been reappearing when the weather turns warm and we have been working on these as they appear. With more warm weather in the forecast the trails will continue to deteriorate. I will post an updated report as soon as the weather and snow conditions improve and we start grooming our trails.

Early Season Riding with POOR to FAIR conditions

January 4, 2019 6:53am 25 degrees – Partly Sunny – High of 39 today.

Well we head into a warm up for the weekend which will end on Saturday night when the forecast over night is 18. In between high 30’s during the day. It is supposed to be cloudy which is good. There is SNOW forecast Monday. No firm totals yet.

At this point for the most part the hard ice base is holding in most areas. SNOW on top is thin in spots & there is snirt. Especially on the north side of trails along roads & road crossings. In town Trail 3 heading south is covered as of this morning. Right in town much is covered. The base is from thick to thin. Best riding is still north & east. Conditions are very icy so slow down. Will be riding today & will do another report later with conditions.

There are a couple of sections of trails in Sno-Eagles Country that are one way trails. 10E & 13’s in the Buckatabon Bridge/Bauers Dam area. The trails are very clearly marked as one ways. If you enter the wrong way you will see a sign that says DO NOT ENTER plus you will not be able to read the trail signs as they will be backwards if you are going the wrong way. Over the weekend saw very many riders going the wrong way. This is very dangerous.

EAGLE LAKE TRAIL & CATFISH LAKE TRAIL ARE MARKED & OPEN. Stay by the reflective orange barrels. Do not drift away from the barrels as it is not safe to do so. Remember not all lakes have trails so if you don’t see marker do not ride on it to be safe. These are the only 2 lakes that are marked in Sno-Eagles Country. No other lake trails.

Here are your current conditions:
Not much change here. Going to be a pretty mild weekend with a little snow in the forecast for Monday.

Oneida County portion of our trails are open. They are in very early season conditions. Not much snow for us to work with right now. Use caution and slow down.

Lakes are all marked. Remember, stay as close to the barrels as possible. If you don’t see barrels, assume they are not safe.

Use caution at all road crossing as they are icy.

Cable Area Snowmobile Trail Report

January 3rd, 2019

The Cable Area currently has a 3 to 5″ base.

Expect early riding conditions as not all marshes are frozen yet – some still have areas of open water. Most trails have been rolled and groomed with the exception of our bigger marshes and some outlying areas.

Temps will be in the mid 30s this weekend with overnight lows below freezing. There is a small chance of snow forecasted early next week.

Please remember that our groomers have the right-of-way and they can be out day or night grooming our trails to be the best they can be!

Not much new to report trails and in early season riding conditions. You will encounter alot of rough areas and snirty conditions especially in swampy areas with no snow to start filling areas in. Lakes are marked with orange barrels and safe to cross. Stay close to barrels while crossing the lakes. Temps will be approaching 40 this coming weekend with not much measurable snow in the near future. As always stay on marked trails & purchase your annual trail passes.

All trails will be open, except the trail from Marengo north to the East end of Ashland, that section is closed. They will be grooming the trails on Thursday, January 3. Conditions at this time are rough. Ride at your own risk.

The Tri-County Corridor is now OPEN and groomed but conditions are poor at this time for riding. The Tri-County Corridor is open from Superior to Ashland. There are still several areas on the eastern end that require attention but all known hazards have been identified and marked. Use caution when approaching ribbons, barricades, and cones.

Trail Report – : Ely, Minnesota – January 3, 2019

Taconite/David Dill State Trail

Snow: 12-20”

Base: 2-3”

Groomed: No

Condition: Fair

As of today the Taconite is ungroomed. The following portions will be groomed Thursday and/or Friday: Ely to the Pike River trail bridge (just east of the Arrowhead State Trail junction), and Hwy 53 west to Hwy 73. West of Hwy 73 was groomed over this last weekend.

Hwy 53 going east to the Pike River trail bridge has not yet been groomed because ice is not thick enough in a number of wetlands between Big Aspen and Pfeiffer Lake campground.

The spur trail leading from the Taconite to the Oasis Bar and Grill in Britt has been rerouted due to landowner issues. The reroute goes from the Taconite east of Hwy 53 (opposite side from the Oasis) to Peppard Rd, crosses Hwy 53 at the Peppard Rd Jct, and follows the ditch south to Peel Rd and to the Oasis.

Putnam/Fishing Lakes Trail

This trail remains ungroomed. We anticipate having the Putnam Lake trail groomed within the next week. We’re still unsure when we’ll be able to groom the Fishing Lakes trail because of ice thickness at a flowage southeast of Putnam Lake.

Lake Vermilion- Soudan Underground Mine State Park Trail

The park has five miles of snowmobile trails that connects from the Taconite State Trail to the Lake Vermilion ice trail. This trail remains ungroomed.

Tomahawk Trail – No current report

Arrowhead State Trail

Snow: 14-22”

Base: 2-3”

Groomed: Partially

Condition: Fair

The Arrowhead is groomed from the Fortune Bay trail to the Frazier Bay shelter and from the Bill Morgan trail north to the 3K trails. The trail section from the Landing spur trail south to the Frazier Bay shelter should be groomed entirely by Friday night. We anticipate grooming the section from the Bill Morgan trail to the Arrowhead Link trail within the next week. We are currently checking ice thickness in swamps south of Elephant Lake and Ban Lake so we can determine when we can groom those sections. Please be aware of and slow down for logging activity throughout the trail.

I rode the entire Frosty Club trail system yesterday and things were white and flat (except for the swamp just west of town which we can not get a groomer through). Grooming is going on daily and it shows in the quality of the Frosty Club trails. We could definitely use some snow and do not need the warmer temps this weekend….but for now Land O Lakes trails are in good shape.

Trail Report – : Lake Gogebic | Bergland, Michigan – January 3, 2019

Good morning and Happy New Year from Lake Gogebic. It was an extremely busy weekend – but we made it through, riders had a great time, and overall positive reports were in abundance. Certainly, not perfect conditions, but given the amount of traffic and snow we’ve received, everyone had good reports and gave the trails and the area a “thumbs up” to all out local area Grooming Clubs!

We owe some updates – so here they are. These are combined reports from local grooming clubs, guests at our Lodge, and from a trip Jim and Anthony took yesterday.

As of Jan 2, 2019 – all Lake Gogebic Area trails recently groomed.

Trail 1North: Trail 1 N from Bergland and the North Shore of Lake Gogebic reported to be in very good condition. White Pine to Silver City is ridable, but in poor condition. There is one large marked waterhole about 4/10 South of Silver City that is hoping to be repaired this week.

Trail 1 South: (to Presque) recently groomed. Good condition, however, gets thin South of Marenisco. Groomed from Marenisco North to West Side Resort where the trail ends for now. Option is to hop on lake and continue North about 4 mi north, then get off the lake and follow signs to where you can pick up trail system again.

Trail 102: South Boundary to 102 beautiful trail with flocked snow. Very good condition with a few spots but hopefully our -12 degree temps last night took care of those.

Trail 8 East: Across top of lake Gogebic very good shape. East is fair/good.

Trail 8 West: Fair condition. Improves further west and at Tula Crossing West. Unplowed county road – reported by Gogebic Range Trail Authority as EXCELLENT.

Trail 100: Closed

Trail 101 and Trail 13: both in good to very good condition as reported by the North Country Snowmobile Club.

Trail 137: (the railroad grade between Ontonagon and Rockland) was groomed today and is thin, but in good condition.

Trail 12:

Greenland to 137 – Good to fair condition with some wet spots between the intersection with Trail 137 to Woodspur Road.
Ontonagon to Potato Farm Road – There are a couple of water holes in the wooded sections west of Ontonagon, but they should be iced over now. Not groomed thru this section right now as the weight of the rig is still breaking thru. The highline section between Norwich Road and Potato Farm Road is in very good condition.
Along LP Walsh Road – The straight section that runs along the north side of LP Walsh Road just east of Hwy 64 has had open running water in every low spot that doesn’t have a culvert or bridge. Many of these have probably started to freeze up, especially with last night’s -12 degree temps but you can also ride the snow bank along the shoulder for this 4 miles. It is legal to do so, as this is a county road. Please ride with caution when you share the road with autos and trucks.

Trail 101 – Potato Farm Rd to Trail 13: very good condition.

Trail 13:

From Trail 101 to 137 very good condition.
Trail 13 from Trail 101 south to Bergland was also groomed Monday night by Gogebic Area Grooming.
The section between the river crossing and Trail 137 is in poor condition. It’s about a 1/2 mile of trail and we would recommend the alternate route below to and from Trail 137. It is not being groomer right now.
The section between Trail 137 and Rockland was groomed Saturday. Groomer went through and just pulled out, so use caution. -12 temps last night probably helped out.

DETOUR:

West out of Rockland – take Trail 137 right (north) at the junction just West of town. Turn left onto Victoria Road (West) (I believe it is the first stop sign you will come to.) This will take you right back to the trail at the river bridge which runs part of this road.

If you are heading East to Rockland – stay on Victoria Road after you cross the river. You will meet Trail 137 about a mile up the road. Turn right on Trail 137 and it will take you right back to 13.

If you are coming South from Ontonagon on Trail 137 and want to go

We are heading into a weekend calling for warmer temps but those temps are only around for a couple of hours. We’ve got a great base which developed over the holidays due to the help of some sleet and freezing temps. Last night is was -12 degrees – so anything wet should be firm by now. Snows in the forecast for a couple of days starting Jan 7. Will just need to see what that brings. Do the Heike Lunta.

Please be safe when heading out. Make sure your phone is charged and keep in mind that not all areas have cell coverage! Grab a map, put a couple waters and some snacks in your bag and always make sure everyone in your group knows where they are headed. Be respectful of private land owners, and of all the hard work our volunteers and Groomers put in to ensure that you have a great experience. Please consider joining a club (or two or three!). Above all – have fun enjoying all that the Lake Gogebic Area in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan has to offer!

NOTE: It is illegal to ride on or ride the plowed shoulder of any Michigan state highway. (in this area: M64-M28-M38). When the trail runs along the hwy, you are allowed to come up onto the shoulder to go around a hazard or cross a bridge when necessary, but then you MUST return back to the trail. County deputies, state troopers and DNR law enforcement will write tickets for this infraction.
